Last Saturday 18th Sept Vodafone hosted a full one day event, the 'London Ajax User Group Happening: JavaScript MiniConf'. The event was co-ordinated by Dylan Schiemann, London Ajax User Group organiser and one of the creators of the Dojo toolkit..

Around 45 keen developers attended from across the board including professional developers, hobbyists and newcomers to JavaScript. With some attendees travelling in from as far away as Ireland and Portugal.

The day consisted of an array of highly informative presentations (from the meetup site):

  • James Thomas (IBM): "Browser Data Stores"
  • Andrew Betts (Assanka, Meteor): "Ajax Navigation: pitfalls and best practices"
  • Piotr Zalewa (JSFiddle, MooTools):
  • Ross Illingworth: "Require or Repeat, dependency management and simulating multiple threading"
  • Dylan Schiemann (SitePen, Dojo): "A quick summary of Comet and server-side JavaScript toolkits and frameworks"
  • Radu-Florin Cojocaru (Vodafone): "Node.js vs PHP & Apache"
  • José Moreira (TweetIRC): "TweetIRC: A Node Knockout entry"
  • Ciaran Rooney (Skimlinks): "How to serve a JS file a Billion times a month"
  • Sanj Matharu (Vodafone, mobile widgets): "Vodafone Widget Run-time"
  • Dylan Schiemann (SitePen, Dojo): "Transforming Dojo from Web to Mobile"

Throughout the day the presentations demonstrated the clear momentum being gained by the alignment of developer technologies for mobile and the web. And now developers are seeing that they can use their web developer skills and get their apps to market easily via initiatives such as JIL and WAC.

In addition to the technical presentations, attendees were also very interested in the ability to do remote testing on real devices via the Perfecto mobile service. If you are interested in this FREE service why not give it a try it here http://developer.vodafone.com/develop-apps/test/perfecto/.

Many thanks to Dylan for organising the event. You can read the comments from the attendees and see a few photos from the event here, http://www.meetup.com/londonajax/calendar/14449749/
