Launch of Vodacom Apps in South Africa

We’re really excited to announce that Vodacom in South Africa has launched the first application store in the market– Vodacom Apps will feature a catalogue of over 140,000 applications. We think that this will drive the growth and innovation within an already thriving local South African mobile ecosystem.

The store, known as Vodacom Apps, will deliver applications for major mobile platforms including Android, Blackberry, Java, Symbian and Windows Mobilewhich means you can address the vast majority of data capable feature phones and smart phones in the market.  The store will feature a wide variety of apps in various categories such as games, travel and entertainment, business and professional, work and school, and phone utilities.

At this moment in time, the store supports free apps but we do hope to be able to support paid-for apps very soon. So keep eye on the Vodafone developer website and blog for further news.

Along with the application store, Vodafone developer has been now has information to support developers targeting South Africa. This means that you can expect more technical and commercial support, including training, workshops and innovation incentives over the coming months. We hope that this will excite you and encourage you to develop apps for South Africa and also generate revenue from them.

We feel that this is a really exciting opportunity for you to target the apps market in South Africa and take advantage of the huge growth in emerging markets.

If you have any questions or feedback please contact us on dev.support@vodafone.com or post in the forums and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
