Vodafone R&D shows off M2M at DroidCon

On 25-26 October Nicholas Herriot and Ashley Mills from Vodafone Group R&D joined forces with developer.vodafone.com to showcase some of the demos from their collaboration with ARM's mbed platform for rapid prototyping. The picture below shows the demo part of their stand:

This comprised of:

A) An SMS driven, websockets triggered live tile guessing game.
B) "The Question Mark" - an adhoc feedback point for anywhere gatherings (prints out SMSs sent to it).
C) The color changing light (changes color according to remote instructions).
D) The Dwarf Door (remote access enabled).

Hopefully you will already have heard about the Vodafone Foundation Smart Accessibility Awards 2012, the competition that calls for developers across Europe to design smartphone applications which take into consideration the needs of older people and people with disabilities. On the evening of 27th June Vodafone developer in collaboration with Group R&D had the pleasure of hosting a recurring Meetup called The Internet of Things.

Ashley Mills (@ashleyjsmills) from Vodafone’s R&D group was first to present and delivered a talk on R&D’s work with the mbed team. The mbed is an ARM based microcontroller coupled with a cloud based compiler environment for developing embedded devices. R&D has been working with mbed to write and test a library for Vodafone dongles, you can find out more about this here.

On 14th June 2012, Vodafone xone™, the incubation center of Vodafone R&D and Expertmaker, a leading Artificial Intelligence (AI) software company, announced the winners of the first AI Hackathon held by the two companies over the weekend. A total of ten AI-integrated apps were created and three winners were chosen by the panel of judges which included Fay Arjomandi, Head of Vodafone xone; Lars Hård, CTO and Founder of Expertmaker; Ben Parker, Verizon Wireless Director of Network Planning and Design; and Michel Burger, Vodafone Head of Product Architecture.

OverTheAir 2012, Bletchley Park

June 1st to 2nd saw OverTheAir taking place at Bletchley Park. Representing Vodafone at the event were Nicholas Herriot and Ashley Mills from Vodafone Group R&D. Below is Nicholas’s trip write-up from the event.

OverTheAir is a neutral space where hackers, academics and commercial organisations can get together and be creative! Vodafone developer @ Appnomy, India

It’s been a while since a quality “developer focused” event happened in Bangalore, India’s Silicon Valley. Developers were looking for a platform to showcase their latest innovative Mobile Apps and Appnomy proved to be the right place.

Earlier this month Vodafone developer participated in the API Hackathon (London) along with Apigee and a number of API providers, including Pearson, European Directories, InMobi and Soundcloud.

The event attracted a broad range of developers including a mix of freelance and enterprise developers, with a range of experience, coding skills and interests.

The event program, which ran from 10:00-22:00, included,

  • Lightening talks - wherein each API team presented their API, use case and tips to encourage development on their APIs

Kickstart April at the API Hackathon

We're excited to invite you to join other developers, designers, and entrepreneurs at the Hub King's Cross in London for a day of brainstorming, coding, and hacking APIs to bring your next best app idea to life. At Vodafone developer we recently launched the Smart Accessibility Awards, where you have the chance to win a share of €200,000! In the lead up to the competition we’ve teamed up with Mobile Monday (http://www.mobilemonday.org.uk/) and ICT (www.ictktn.org.uk) to host four half-day  accessibility workshops, which kick off in Edinburgh on Friday 16th September. Other locations include Manchester, London and Belfast, with some exciting European locations too including Madrid (September 28th), the Netherlands and Germany. On Saturday 16th April we hosted a developer day with our friends from Sony Ericsson and Ideaworks. We wanted to focus on 3D techniques for Android (did you ever think that the pressure API could be used to do something cool?) and the capabilities of the OpenGL libraries as well as a demo of the @airplaysdk from Ideaworks.
