Hi there, apologies if this is the wrong place, I'm very new!
We recently got a new mini PC which came preinstalled with Ubuntu 10.10. It's awesome, so far!
Today we got the aforementioned PAYG dongle, but I'm having real problems with it. It appears to not be recognised when I plug it in, although I have since managed to find it under the device manager.
I've installed your Vodafone Mobile Connect program, which is not recognising the dongle being plugged in. I'm at a bit of a loss to be honest.
I've only been using Ubuntu for 3 days, so I'm not very clued up with the command prompt and such, so need some really basic instructions on how to get this to connect.
Does anyone have the custom settings to get the dongle to work?
Sorry if this post makes no sense, it's been a long day!

I could not install the packages : "bcm2.99.12-1all.deb" and "wader-core0.5.5-1all.deb" . Because of dependency Problems onto each other. I have Ubuntu Karmic Koala on my computer not Lucid.

I have hopefully correctly installed the other two packages from the source below ( https://forge.betavine.net/frs/?group_id=76 ).

What shall I do next, without the BCM I will not get anywhere. Is there to a simpler way to do it over the Connection Manager ?

Thank you for your help !

  1. Hi Claus, Just try installing the usb-modeswitch-data package from https://forge.betavine.net/frs/?group_id=76 first then unplug/replug your stick. - (3 years, 6 months ago) andrewbird

Hi Martin, I'm not sure if this is a timing specific problem, as different machines give different results with seemingly the same modem device, but you might try the following to switch it by hand:

sudo eject /dev/sr0

or

sudo eject /dev/scd0

then after a few moments do the

lspci | grep 19d2

to see if the product ID has changed

  1. Hi Andrew, sudo eject /dev/sr1 did the trick!! Thank you very much! Martin - (3 years, 10 months ago) MRE

Hi Martin, I can see from your lsusb.txt that your stick hasn't been automatically switched from pure storage mode to modem/storage mode. You might try upgrading the usb-modeswitch-data package to the latest shipped with Maverick. You can do this as follows:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install usb-modeswitch-data

Once you've done that, pull the stick out and reinsert. Wait a few seconds and see if the stick changes product id

lsusb | grep 19d2

If it's still 2000 then the updated package hasn't fixed the problem. If it's changed then you might run the program from the terminal and capture the output if necessary

bcm 2>&1 | tee bcm.log

Hope that helps,

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Here the requested info: Thanks!

The Linux distribution you are running on and its version - e.g. Ubuntu 10.04 etc Do 'dmesg > dmesg.txt' and post the file dmesg.txt here Do 'lsusb > lsusb.txt' and post the file lsusb.txt here Do 'sudo dpkg -s usb-modeswitch-data | head' and post the Version: line here Do 'sudo dpkg -s python-messaging' and post the Version: line here Do 'sudo dpkg -s wader-core' and post the Version: line here Do 'sudo dpkg -s bcm' and post the Version: line here You should be able to list the log files using 'ls -l ~/.bcm/log /var/log/wader.log' if you see two files you've found them, else they are missing

The Linux distribution you are running on and its version - e.g. Ubuntu 10.04 etc You are using Ubuntu 10.10 the Maverick Meerkat - released in October 2010 and supported until April 2012.

Do 'dmesg > dmesg.txt' and post the file dmesg.txt here

Do 'sudo dpkg -s usb-modeswitch-data | head' and post the Version: line here

Do 'sudo dpkg -s python-messaging' and post the Version: line here

Python-Messaging: Version: 0.5.9-1

Do 'sudo dpkg -s wader-core' and post the Version: line here

Wader-core: Version: 0.5.5-1

Do 'sudo dpkg -s bcm' and post the Version: line here

bcm: Version: 2.99.12-1

You should be able to list the log files using 'ls -l ~/.bcm/log /var/log/wader.log' if you see two files you've found them, else they are missing /home/martin/.bcm/log/var/log/wader.log: Is geen map (they are missing)

Hi Martin, Thanks for the info on the modem type. Now I just need to know:

  • The Linux distribution you are running on and its version - e.g. Ubuntu 10.04 etc
  • Do 'dmesg > dmesg.txt' and post the file dmesg.txt here
  • Do 'lsusb > lsusb.txt' and post the file lsusb.txt here
  • Do 'sudo dpkg -s usb-modeswitch-data | head' and post the Version: line here
  • Do 'sudo dpkg -s python-messaging' and post the Version: line here
  • Do 'sudo dpkg -s wader-core' and post the Version: line here
  • Do 'sudo dpkg -s bcm' and post the Version: line here
  • You should be able to list the log files using 'ls -l ~/.bcm/log /var/log/wader.log' if you see two files you've found them, else they are missing

Hope it helps,

Andrew

Hi Martin, You'll need to give me some more clues about the system that BCM's not working on. Perhaps:

Modem type
Distribution type / version
Output of dmesg
The log that BCM produces - ~/.bcm/log
The log that the core produces /var/log/wader.log

Best regards,

Andrew

  1. Hi Andrew, It is a K3520-Z. The Betavine connection manager does not recognize it. I canĀ“t find the logfiles, but maybe i am using the wrong commands being a Linux newbe. Can you help me with this? Thanks, Martin - (3 years, 10 months ago) MRE

Hi glitterbump, There were some patches done around interoperability with Network Manager in Maverick regarding PIN, whuch haven't been packaged yet, but I believe the Lucid packages should work on Maverick OK.

Hope it helps,

Andrew

HI Andrew....BCM page suggests that it is only suitable for Lucid.....any ideas if it works for 10.10?

Hi glitterbump, No it makes perfect sense. The VMC program you are using was never designed to be used with Ubuntu >= 8.10, later versions of Ubuntu have a network manager program that interferes with operation of third party connection managers. For that reason VMC was reengineered, and renamed to Betavine Connection Manager or BCM. You should remove the VMC packages you installed and add the top four packages at https://forge.betavine.net/frs/?group_id=76 , in this order:

usb-modeswitch-data_20100826-1betavine1_all.deb
python-messaging_0.5.9-1_all.deb
wader-core_0.5.5-1_all.deb
bcm_2.99.12-1_all.deb

Restart your machine, then insert your dongle. You should be able to start BCM from the menu, and it should now recognise your K3570-Z dongle.

Hope it helps,

Andrew

  1. Hi Andrew, It works fine on my old HP PC but not on my older Toshiba Sattelite Pro 4600. Do have more tips? Regards, Martin - (3 years, 10 months ago) MRE
