Just getting my bearings so bear with me...

As I understand the state of play, the Vodafone API is JIL-based and JIL is a JavaScript API accessible from Widgets.

If I want to write an app that needs network or device services AND presents a rich UI that cannot reasonably be achieved through DHTML, can I do it?

I don't think I can embed an applet or a flash resource in my Widget. Is that right? If I write a java midlet, can I get to the API?

Thanks,
Rev

From my understanding the Vodafone APIs are network-based and will be included in the JIL SDK. For more information on the JIL SDK it might be worth posting to the JIL beta site, www.jil.org On your remaining questions we will see what further information we can get hold of.

Many thanks Kev. As it happens I had posted to the JIL site and have since had it confirmed that JIL does mean JavaScript, no Java & no Flash. That said, the feeling was that this would still permit very rich UI. Perhaps my scepticism about the portability & resilience of very clever JavaScript is dated. I'm very interested to see how Widge+JIL evolves. It certainly seems that Vodafone is keen on this approach. If I WERE to resort to a java midlet, I have now realised that JavaME provides APIs that cover more of the territory of JIL than I had realised (e.g. messaging, location, pim) but not all (e.g. account info, call records, make voice call, microbill).

Thanks for your feedback it is appreciated. Take a look at some of the Widgets built recently in the community and you'll see more and more with a very professional looking front-end. When we receive more information around the APIs we will make it available on the site.

is it already given to know what devices will be using JIL technology (and by consequence the Vodafone API)? Are the API browser/vendor/other dependent? I'm playing around with the JIL 1.0 API version, and so far they don't look bad but there is surly a lot of work to do (especially on the emulator I guess that is not supporting all the capabilities claimed in the specification documents - and those last are often buggy or incomplete). Beside this, I'm very exited about those API...

As we don't have that information available to us at this time I would recommend you query this on the JIL forum. When we have more information we will publish, thanks for your enquiry.
