Hi,

this is a post I'm making due to a question on my Blog on the betavine forum from Anton. Read more here.

Are any of our Linux users who use 3G modems having problems on Ubuntu 11 and modems such as the E1690 and K3570-Z? Does Network Manager satisfy your needs? If not just post on the bottom of this mail so we can judge how much of a problem this is.

I believe at the current time there are no plans to create a Ubuntu 11 package. However I' shall endevour to find out if any of the other teams within Vodafone might pick this up.

Kind regards, Nicholas.

?Sorry to say I had to give up on this one as no one could assist, Vodaphone were a waste of time, and despite asking on several forums I was unable to make it work.

The real sickner was I reformatted the HD, installed Vista and was on line instantly on plugging it in.

Sorry troops but I have to be able to check bookings whilst away from the business and HAVE to have a working dongle. Like so many others I am utterly frustrated that I have to use Windows to do simple things like play a movie when Ubuntu requires a bunch of tap dancing to do even that.

You are getting better but you are not there yet, not by some distance.

  1. Hi Shenachie, I'm sorry things didn't work out for you, this was absolutely the right place to ask the question.I did ask you to start a new thread with your question specifics as this thread was someone else's and as such I'd no idea what stick / distro you were trying to get going. - (1 year, 9 months ago) andrewbird

Guys, i have found this on ubuntu forums and it works fine now! Even better than before:

I had the same problem and was pulling my hair out to get my Voda dongle to work on 11.04. Finally I was able to use the network manager by uninstalling (apt-get remove) all components left by Betavine connection manager (or Vodafone Connection Manager). This included: usb-switchmode usb-switchmode-data ozerocdoff vodafone-mobile-connect bcm wadercore python-messaging

After removing all of those I reinstalled modemmanger (sudo apt-get install modemmanger) and this reinstalled usb-switchmode as a dependency (Voda uses an older package).

Then I plugged in my dongle and Network Manager was able to recognize my dongle (after about 45 seconds) and connect.

I've been using ubuntu for almost 8 months now so I'm by no means an expert and this is my first post on the forums so be gentle if I have broken any posting morays. I'm constantly looking through these forums for help and decided i should start sharing what i've found. Good luck. tanzantj is offline Reply With Quote

Hi Nicholas, The reason BCM / wader-core is not working on Natty is that the version of python is changed to version 2.7.1 from 2.6. The BCM code will work with this fine, but it's not in the place that it expects to find it. Ideally we would respin packages from now on for both Lucid(LTS) and Natty(11.04). I had a message from a user that managed to fix it by symlinking from 2.7.1 python to the directory where 2.6 would usually be installed. You can check his post here

Hope it helps,

Andrew
