Hi,

Last week I received my belgacom 3G network card and Vodafone k3806 usb stick to connect my laptop to mobile internet. On my son's windows 7 it all works fine. However I am a linux user and my laptop is running (X)Ubuntu 12.04.

When I insert the USB stick it gets recognized as a both a mounted drive and as a mobile internet device. A wizard opens that let me select the APN based on some country database. Under the network manager icon appears the possibility to select a mobile network and to enable mobile networking. The USB stick flashes green, but I do not succeed in making a connection.

When I click on my network indicator it looks like a mobile network with a certain strength is detected. However I cannot connect. Under "edit connections" in the network manager there are a lot more possibilities to enter. I have entered the PIN code there, but still I am not able to connect to the 3 G network.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I would suspect that the APN settings you are using are incorrect. Unfortunately I don't know what the correct ones are, and sometimes the ones provided in the Mobile Broadband Provider Information package that Network Manager uses for its wizard, are incorrect. I would suggest that you have a look at the settings that the Windows software uses and copy them exactly. Be careful though, as using incorrect APN settings may allow you to connect, but may be on the wrong tariff to suit your contract or plan. Note down the 'APN', 'username', 'password' and any authentication setting like 'PAP', 'CHAP' etc. Then transfer the settings and the stick to the Ubuntu 12.04 system. You'll find the settings under 'edit connection' / 'mobile broadband' tab in the Network Manager applet in the systray.

Hope it helps,

Andrew

  1. Same problem here, did you solve it? I have a Vodafone Italy contract "Internet Go" with Vodafone Internet Key (Huawei K3806). The APN for the contract is web.omnitel.it, but adding it to the connection properties isn't solving the issue. Thx, Oscar. - (10 months, 1 week ago) oscarfonts
