What's New with CAMARA: Vodafone Brings More API Power to Developers

The CAMARA Project is on a mission to shake up the telecoms industry. If you are not familiar with it, CAMARA is a collaborative initiative within the telco industry and part of The Linux Foundation project. It currently has more than 1,000 people from almost 400 companies as members (including Vodafone) to create a unified approach to network capabilities. Put simply, they're working to make life easier with open, standardised APIs ensuring consistency and simplicity with the goal to connect operators and cloud environments seamlessly. You can explore more about CAMARA on their project page or check out their work on GitHub.

The CAMARA Meta-Release for Fall 2024

The big news? CAMARA has just launched its first-ever meta-release, a carefully selected collection of APIs that are market-ready. This is the first of many, with plans to have new meta-releases every six months. This means that developers will have access to more standardised, tested APIs that help you build faster, more securely and with fewer issues from operator-specific differences.

To make this release, these API had to satisfy some strict criteria:

  • Full compliance with CAMARA's guidelines.

  • Successfully tested and proven in a lab environment.

  • At least one certified use case, verified by GSMA here.

A full list of the released APIs can be found here.

What this means for You: Vodafone's Developer Marketplace

Some of the announced CAMARA APIs are already available on Vodafone's Developer Marketplace portal (Number Verify, SIM Swap and Simple Edge Discovery) with more on their way. These APIs are designed to help you build secure, reliable applications for customers and third-party companies that can scale across networks. Whether it's ensuring the right person has access to a device (SIM Swap and Number Verify) or helping developer to find the best edge location for their computational needs (Simple Edge Discovery), Vodafone's got you covered.

We also have sandboxed versions of the Location Retrieval and Location Verification APIs available for developers to familiarise themselves with location-based capabilities. You can try them via the Vodafone API Lab available in the Vodafone Developers workspace on Postman.

If you're already using Vodafone's APIs, these new CAMARA APIs will fit right into your workflow. And if you're new to our platform, our Marketplace provides a wealth of resources to help you start building the future of connectivity.
